Grand Parade Investments (GPI), which brought Burger King to SA in 2013, is to add to their portfolio of franchise brands by bringing both Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins stores to South Africa. Their plans are to open as many as 250 Dunkin’ Donuts and 70 Baskin-Robbins stores in SA. The first Dunkin’ Donuts will open in Cape Town in June 2016.

With more than 11,500 restaurants in 40 countries worldwide, Dunkin’ Donuts sells more than 1.8-billion cups of coffee a year. The brand aimed to offer regional menu items to cater to domestic tastes, it said.

Baskin-Robbins is the world’s largest chain of ice cream specialty shops known for its “31 flavours” and range of frozen desserts, frozen beverages, ice cream sundaes and custom ice-cream cakes. Baskin-Robbins has a presence in more than 50 countries outside the US including India, China and Russia. The agreement will see the introduction of Baskin-Robbins ice cream products in supermarket chains and convenience stores in SA.

With both brands the plan is to import product, with ‘finishing’ done in stores until such time as critical mass is achieved. The company has localized 95% of inputs to Burger King already. To date there are 51 Burger King stores – well below the initial target of 100, with the revised target now 85 by the end of June.
