All children from preschoolers to teenagers can benefit from learning with the Kumon Method. Kumon will help students improve or extend numeracy and literacy skills. This includes gifted children and those with learning difficulties.

The Brand

The Kumon Method of learning was developed over 50 years ago in Japan by Toru Kumon, a high school Maths teacher who wanted to assist his son who was struggling with Maths. The Kumon Programme was conceptualised when others saw the effectiveness of the worksheets he designed in solidifying foundations and enabling mastery through practise.

Kumon is not designed to improve Maths and English skills as an end in itself; it is an educational method which uses Maths and English skills to develop the potential of each child. The aim of Kumon is to unleash each child’s potential to love learning, by improving confidence and self-esteem, and encouraging self-discipline and a good daily study habit.

There is no failing in Kumon, because each child works at his or her own carefully monitored level.

The first Kumon Study Centre in South Africa was established in 1991. Franchising of the concept commenced in 1992 and at present, there are more than 200 franchisees in South Africa with steadily increasing student numbers. Kumon Education South Africa (Pty) Ltd was established in 1997 and is a fully owned subsidiary of Kumon Japan.

Concept

All children from pre-schoolers to teenagers can benefit from learning with the Kumon Method. Kumon will help students improve or extend numeracy and literacy skills. This includes gifted children and those with learning difficulties.

Kumon franchises are owner operated businesses and will, under licence, provide the Kumon Maths and English Programmes to students at their Kumon Study Centres. These Centres must operate from a permanent venue used exclusively for Kumon during prescribed hours, for a minimum of four afternoons per week. This is done to promote professionalism and increase profitability.

Dedicated area managers work with the franchisees to assist them to maximise their businesses for the benefit of the franchisees and their students. This ensures that franchisees enjoy access to expert advice at all times. All Kumon materials required for students to work on the Kumon programme are included in the monthly management services fee.

Support

The Franchise Recruitment and Development Teams work closely with franchisees from application to the opening of the Kumon Study Centre, giving advice from site selection to suppliers. The Kumon SA Head Office and distribution centre is located in Johannesburg with branch offices in Durban and Cape Town.

Kumon SA provides initial training and on-going workshops ensuring that franchisees always have access to the most up-to-date information on the programme and business system. On-going training is an expectation franchisees are required to fulfil.

Various national and regional marketing campaigns are developed and implemented by Kumon SA, whereas local marketing initiatives are franchisee dependent.
