The first Legends Barbershop was born on a sidewalk in Eldorado Park in 2011. The founders both had a passion for men’s grooming and their enthusiasm for their fledgling business soon made it possible for them to move to a local pool club from where they could better accommodate and serve their fast-growing customer base. 2014 was a watershed year for Legends Barbershop since it represented its rebirth and the year in which the concept really took off. Sheldon decided to go solo in the business and despite the fact that he was still employed with Standard Bank on a full-time basis, opened the first fully-fledged Legends Barbershop in Crystal Mall in Eldorado Park. By September of the same year, the success of the shop allowed him to resign from his day job and in July 2015, he opened a second branch in Florida on the West Rand.
Legends Barbershops operate in a large and growing market, consisting primarily of men who require hair cutting, styling and grooming services, as well as hair products. It is aimed at the more discerning segment of such group where these individuals typically fall in the LSM 5 – 10 category.
There are currently 20 well-established Legends Barbershops, 6 of which are company-owned and 13 franchised outlets spread throughout South Africa, specifically in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, North West Province, Limpopo, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga.
Five more outlets will be opening in due course, including an outlet in Gaborone, Botswana. There are currently no Legends Barbershops in the Eastern Cape and it is anticipated that opening an outlet in Port Elizabeth will set the benchmark for future outlets in the province.
All outlets, company-owned or franchised, can depend on the franchisor’s ongoing support, assistance and advice. The franchisees receive initial and ongoing training from the franchisor on all facets of the operation of the business. The franchisor is assisted by field officers to whom franchisees may also freely appeal to for assistance.
It needs to be reiterated that the operation of a Legends Barbershop outlet is a relatively elementary process. All barbers are fully trained and all are accredited with Legends Barbershop’s training academies. The franchisees’ functions are to oversee the smooth and seamless operation of their outlet, to ensure quality service, to build the reputation and goodwill of their shop and to protect and promote the reputation of the brand.
Regular inspections by head office staff will lend the necessary support, identify problem areas, introduce and effect remedial action and address problems or issues which the franchisee or staff may have.
