Burger King is introducing pork products in South Africa, so 46% of its restaurants will lose their halaal certification on 1 September.
All outlets in KwaZulu-Natal will remain halaal-certified, while Gauteng will see the biggest number of restaurants that will change status.
These are all the Burger Kings that will no longer be halaal.
On 1 September a total of 44 Burger King restaurants, representing 46% of its footprint in South Africa, will no longer be halaal-certified.
Burger King, which previously operated as entirely halaal, has been considering adding pork to its menu for some years, and is also currently “exploring vegetarian options”.
The menu change will see its outlets split into two categories, with various measures in place to keep halaal and non-halaal food separate from source through to delivery at its restaurants. That way, it says, it can guarantee Muslim customers peace of mind at those restaurants without pork on the menu.
The change will affect none of the company’s stores in KwaZulu-Natal, while Gauteng will see the largest number of outlets that will change their status.
These are all the South African Burger King restaurants that will no longer be halaal certified from 1 September 2019.

Burger King says some of its non-halaal outlets will have sites that are halaal-certified within a couple of hundred metres. In a handful of cases, however, the closest halaal-certified restaurant will now be a hundred kilometres or more away.
Here is the company’s chart of the closest certified outlets to each of those that will no longer carry certification.
