A decision was made to franchise the business model in early 2016. Big Joe’s was the manufacturer and supplier of pies for Deeghuys stores. The first Big Joe’s retail store in Hermanus was an immediate success and a second store opened nearby, in Strand, allowed them to further refine the business and franchise model. The Strand store was franchised in February 2017, followed by a successful opening in Krugersdorp two months later. The opening of Big Joe’s Pies in Kuils River, Randburg, Centurion, Pretoria is eagerly anticipated. Under the stewardship of Hennie Andrews, founder of King Pie and Pieter van der Merwe, founder of PNA and former Managing Director of Deeghuys, Big Joe’s has emerged as a sustainable and profitable franchise model.
We are a Franchise operation whereby the Franchisee is obliged to be the owner operator to ensure the highest standard of quality and consistency. The owners of the brand is myself who is the founder of the PNA Stationery group and Hennie Andrews who is the founder of King Pie. We are experienced players in the market and we plan to open at least 200 factory stores throughout South Africa as well as an additional 800 bake-offs.
Our requirement in terms of a factory shop size varies between 100m² and 160m² depending on the size of the market we serve. Our current shop turnover varies between R 300 000 and R 500 000 per month, on average each store sells at least 1 000 pies per day attracting a minimum of 500 customers daily.
We take pride that we are an open plan pie bakery whereby the shop is designed in such a way for the customer to view the entire process while in our shop. Our customers are able to experience the freshness and the process that each pie is handmade and baked fresh on site on a daily basis. In addition we offer frozen pies which contributes to a large portion of our business.
Platters are also available on a large scale for functions and offices. Sit down facilities are also provided and will be offering coffee in the bigger outlets soon.
Big Joe’s Pies is a turnkey franchise that includes site selection, lease negotiations, store planning, layout and design.
Support is provided by the Head Office throughout the store establishment and opening process to provide support and ensure a successful store launch. Pre-opening and in-store training as well as pre-opening and opening marketing campaigns is provided by the Franchisor.
Applicants must be coach-able, system-oriented and driven individuals. The ideal franchisee is a hardworking hands-on individual who is willing to spend time in the outlet. Franchisees should be passionate about customer service and have the ambition to develop and grow their business. Applicants will benefit from prior business ownership or management experience.
