HSP Group (Health and Safety Professionals) was founded in 1995 in Ekurhuleni, South Africa, by Mandy Steyn. It began when Steyn identified a growing need across corporate sectors and industrial sites for effective, compliant Primary Health Care and Occupational Health Services. Originally established as a close corporation, the business evolved significantly over the decades and was re-registered as HSP Group SA (Pty) Ltd in 2013 to better serve its expanding client base.

From its roots as a single service provider, the brand has grown into a leader in the South African occupational health landscape. Its future aspirations centre on maintaining its status as a premier national healthcare partner, expanding its footprint of “one-stop” referral centres, and continuing to benchmark occupational health standards through independent, objective, and compliant medical solutions.

Concept

The Business: HSP Group operates as a specialized provider of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) compliance solutions. The core business revolves around running Occupational Health Clinics that offer medical surveillance, fitness certificates, travel medicine, and primary healthcare. This is supplemented by mobile medical units and on-site clinic management for corporate clients.

Unique Selling Proposition (USP): Unlike many competitors who only offer basic screening, HSP Group provides a holistic solution that includes “negotiating outcomes”—helping companies manage the results of medical screenings rather than just handing over data. The brand operates independently of any specific hospital group or insurance company, ensuring advice is objective and fee structures remain competitive.

  • Target Market: Corporate entities, industrial firms (mining, construction, manufacturing, logistics), and any business requiring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Typical Location: The model supports both fixed Referral Centres (brick-and-mortar clinics in accessible business nodes) and Mobile Units that service clients on-site.

Staff Compliment: A typical franchise unit requires a team of qualified professionals, including Occupational Health Practitioners (nurses/doctors), administrative staff for bookings and certification, and support staff for client relations.

Support

Initial Training: Franchisees receive comprehensive induction training covering HSP Group’s proprietary systems and operational procedures. This includes instruction on the legal frameworks of Occupational Health in South Africa, ensuring you are equipped to deliver compliant services from day one.

On-Going Support:

  • Operational Systems: Access to a centralized, cloud-based Patient Management System which stores patient histories and ensures uniform medical certificates across the national network.
  • Centralized Administration: Head office support includes centralized booking capabilities and executive summary reporting for large national clients.
  • Compliance Audits: Regular audits are conducted to ensure your clinic meets the “extreme standards” required by the brand and legislation, protecting you and your clients from liability.
  • Marketing: Assistance with national brand visibility and marketing strategies (funded by a 3% marketing fee).

Expert Consultancy: Access to the franchisor’s management team for advice on complex cases or client-specific risk assessments.

We are looking for hands-on Owner-Operators, not passive investors. While a background in healthcare or business management is advantageous, the ideal candidate must possess the following specific attributes:

  • Financial Qualification: Available capital to set up the business (approx. R1.25m total investment) with at least 50% unencumbered own cash contribution.
  • Business Acumen: A clear understanding of local markets, people management, and how franchising works.
  • Operational Resilience: You must not be afraid of long hours, hard work, and operating under pressure.
  • Systems Orientation: You must be willing to follow proven procedures and compliance frameworks strictly.

Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, and a genuine understanding of the importance of customer service in a medical environment.
